East Asian Studies

Non-Major Program Requirements

This non-major program is interdisciplinary. It can include introductory study of Chinese or Japanese, as well as a wide variety of courses designed to introduce the student to many aspects of the civilizations of China and Japan, although students will focus primarily upon one or the other of these cultures in their course of study.

Students are encouraged to include language study as part of this program, preferably beginning in the freshman year.  For information about language study and placement, and for information about how language study can work with this non-major concentration, please consult the EALL homepage, or see Professor Janet Ikeda, Chair of the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures.

The Program in East Asian Studies is not a major.  Students identified by the Chair of the East Asian Studies Committee as having completed the program will have a notation placed on their transcripts at graduation.  While only certain regular courses are listed below as meeting the requirements of this program, other courses across the curriculum study appropriate material within the context of the various disciplines and in interdisciplinary ways.  Students may petition the program committee to include other relevant courses in the program requirement.  Students in the East Asian Studies non-major program are strongly urged to participate in Washington and Lee's study and exchange programs in Asia.  Adjustments in requirements can be made, if appropriate, to enable the student to take advantage of these opportunities.
